Sticking to the path of moving at warp speed, Social Media (which evolved into Social Business) is now going to start cropping up as the Social Construct.
If you’re still wondering what people are saying about your company or the products you sell on Twitter and facebook or thinking you should dip your toe in the (social) water, it’s time to stop thinking and start doing.
Standing still doesn’t mean you hold your ground while you figure out what to do. Standing still means you fall behind while your competitors get on with it.
Forbes recently published this article that covers why – it’s the best summary of why you need to stop kidding yourself that having a branded twitter handle or facebook page is enough (it’s not).
Drop random humans in a random place and what do they do? Seek survival, of course. And then, immediately thereafter, they form groups. Tell stories. Compete for attention. Create legend. Share rumors. Establish norms for behavior through the give and take of conversation and politics.
Social technologies, nascent as they are, allow humans to act in precisely this way….just amplified. And humans across cultures, ages and demographic sets have responded with a deep and abiding joy and ferocity.
If you’re stuck (whether it be by fear, not knowing how to start or time poor), hire a specialist in on a contract basis to help you figure it out and get it started. Find the champions within your business to start the process. Enable them and support them.
Do something. Just don’t do nothing.
